Gotham TV Show: Not Batman for kids.

mash: nerd TV / Parenting

kid friendly TV shows like GothamSo the Gotham TV show did not disappoint me: the nerd. I placed it on my Parent Nerdgasm list for the upcoming season. The plot is thick, and not centered on Bruce Wayne at all. I’m happy about that. New character perspective opens up a whole new world of possibilities. The actors are doing their roles justice. Ben McKenzie is complex and multi-layered as the once-and-future Commissioner of Gotham City. Even the made up bit roles, like random-female-cop-with-a-grudge have a bit of depth. And the sexy, yet not-so-nice Fish Mooney is being done wonderfully by Jada Pinkett Smith.

However, it took less than 5 minutes for me to mentally remove the show from my Parent Nerdgasm list. Why? (Warning: spoiler alert. The next few lines have nothing really to do with the overall storyline, but if you haven’t seen it yet, you might want to skip them anyway). In the first 5 minutes of the very first episode, you see Bruce’s parents brutally slain. Yes, blood, lifeless bodies, and all. In the next scene we see a prisoner who is being led into the cell of a dirty police station. He is big, unkempt, disoriented, and asking for his “pills”. Before being pushed into the cell he grabs a lady officer and takes her hostage at gunpoint. As all the other officers in the precinct turn their guns on him he mutters to the hostage ‘I said give me my pills *itch.” Of course, Gordon saves the day (watch the show to find out how). However as he is being taken into custody, the friendly officers of Gotham beat the man to a bloody pulp in the background. This is all before the show even got geared up.

And the violence in the second episode was even worse.

Hum. Is this what I want my toddler (or any kid for that matter) to be watching? Not so much. There have been more than enough studies to convince me that allowing a child to watch realistic violence on TV will have damaging and negative affect on them developmentally and socially. That means even having it on TV when Baby Mash might see it is a no-no.

So while I totally eat up the Gotham TV show myself–it’s definitely a post-bedtime show.

Ohhh.. I see.. I am particularly against violence showing on tv while kids are watching. Thank you for keeping us posted. :)

Oh wow, guess my kiddos won’t be watching this. I bet my hubby would love this though.

Wow definitely a post bedtime kind of show. I myself prefer more real like scenarios and get hooked in things like Parenthood and Nashville. I’m sad its the last season of parenthood. :(

Those sound good…. I stick to stuff that’s pretty low-key also when Baby Mash is around.

So true. It’s definitely not for kids. I watched it on Hulu just to check it out and was really surprised at how graphic it was being a show about Batman.

I’m going to have to check this out. I don’t watch much T.V. because I can’t find anything that catches my attention.

  • Letty Desafio

I am glad about this article. I was about to start watching the show, but I know that my son would be interest so I guess it is a no go.

Maybe not until he is in the bed. Some of the scenes are definitely pushing the envelope of what non-cable channels can show.

I have heard of this show, but I haven’t watched it yet. Not sure if I want to, especially if it’s quite graphic.

I have not heard of this. I will have to see if it is available on Netflix or Hulu.

I’m not really one for primetime tv, but this sounds pretty good. I bet my hubs would even like it!

  • @weareofficially

I definitely wouldn’t allow those kinds of films or videos to be seen by my daughter. I watch Walking Dead and when there are parts where beheading and other nasty stuff happens, I ask her to close her eyes, sometimes I just ask her to watch another show on my phone. But you know, if you really like the show, maybe you can sneak out and do it alone. :D

    • http://thatsmashedup.com Mrs. Mashed Up

Oh, I am going to keep watching it–it has be great so far…. just not when Baby Mash is in the room.

Nope we stopped watching TV about a year ago. I can probably count on one hand how many times we turned on the boob tube! LOL

  • Rebecca Swenor

I haven’t watched this but it does sound like I might have to check it out. It seems to have a lot of action. Thanks for sharing.

That show sounds really violent to be aimed at kids. Not cool.

So true! Sadly “Family TV” is fading out. More and more shows now days are not for kids/teens yet are on starting at 8PM.

  • http://blondish.net Nile Flores

When I watched the previews, I had a huge feeling it wasn’t going to be one for the kiddies. Shield also is kind of toeing the line on it too.

My 3 year old has just wanted to watch spiderman today. I wasn’t sure but he kept going on about it. Hard to know, but it definitely sounds like Gotham isnt for children

    Yay for adult TV!

  • Chrissy Mazzocchi
